A.S. Helsingö On Bringing Personality Back To Kitchen Design
A.S. Helsingö’s exquisite color palette is unique in the world of kitchen design. The mission of this Helsinki based company is to bring personal, high quality kitchens with exceptional details available for everyone.
Blush Rose, Feather Grey, Water Green and Linen Brown… The dusty and delicate colour palette of A.S. Helsingö’s kitchen doors as well as the door and handle models make me want to update my kitchen immediately. Helsinki based A.S. Helsingö has only been a short while on the market and I’m not the only one who is already attracted to it. The beginning of the company is promising and they are already selling their high-quality doors for more than ten different countries.
This is not a surprise as the attraction is not only based on the up to date design but, rather on the entire concept which, is just brilliant. To make it brief A.S. Helsingö sells high-quality doors and handles mounted on top of IKEA cabinet frames. In other words, they are doing the same for IKEA kitchens and cabinets as Bemz made for sofa covers few years earlier.
The idea was born when Anssi Jokinen and Sebastian Schauman, the founders of A. S. Helsingö, wondered why stylish kitchens were all looking similar and were way too expensive. The mission of A.S.Helsingö was to bring personal and high quality kitchens available for more people.
Ilona Palmunen, the Creative Director of Helsingö, has also been part of the team from the very beginning and is the woman behind the complete visual concept. Her background is in architecture and her design principle is to make everyday life better. – I also want to think there is no barriers between different art forms, she tells us when we are visiting the A.S. Helsingö’s showroom in the centre of Helsinki. Helsingö’s collection reflects Ilona’s versatility in many ways.
-As an architect, I approach kitchen design from the spatial point of view. Home is something very personal and I think the kitchen should be part of it’s complete decoration, not some kind of separate standout element, she explains.
As a designer, Ilona is inspired by visual contrasts and timeless aesthetics. Keeping this in mind she has created a trendy yet timeless and easily approachable collection. The concept of A.S. Helsingö is based on the idea that the look of the kitchen can easily be modified. Kitchen renovation could sometimes be as easy as changing the doors only.
“The sophisticated and muted colour palette of A.S. Helsingö is designed to adapt to the Northern light.”
— Ilona Palmunen
For Ilona, natural light is an endless source of inspiration.
– It is fascinating how the light changes through the day and the year, she says. The sophisticated and muted colour palette of Helsingö is designed to adapt to the Northern light. At the same time these colours are easy to choose and easy to live with.
We are glad to see A.S. Helsingö entering the bubbling art and design scene which Helsinki is all about right now!
